What thermal imaging can and cannot detect

A powerful tool, often misunderstood. Here is what a thermal camera really shows.

What thermal imaging can and cannot detect

Surface temperature only

A thermal camera such as the FLIR C5 shows the apparent temperature of surfaces. It cannot see through walls. What it can do is reveal patterns on the surface caused by what is happening behind or within it.

What it can help reveal

Thermal bridges, missing or displaced insulation, air leakage, pipe and underfloor heating routes, and cooler areas that may be consistent with evaporating moisture can all show up under the right conditions.

What it cannot prove

A cold patch is not proof of water. Reflections, air movement, different materials and recent sunlight can create similar patterns. That is why thermal anomalies are always checked with other methods, such as moisture measurement.
