What a reading means, and why context matters more than a single number.

How moisture meters are used in building investigations

Non-destructive measurement

Instruments such as the Tramex Moisture Encounter ME5 measure through the surface without drilling. Different modes are designed for different materials and depths, such as timber, plaster and tile, drywall or masonry.

Comparative, not absolute

In many building materials the reading is comparative: it shows where moisture is higher or lower than in a dry reference area. Interpreting the result depends on the material, the mode used, surface salts and metal behind the surface.

Part of a wider picture

Readings are most useful when mapped across an area and combined with visual observation, timing and building knowledge. A moisture meter does not detect mould; it helps understand the conditions that might allow it.
